Sting said the following during a press conference before the show in Jerusalem: "I've always been interested in Israel, there's just never been a firm offer before. I hope this will be the first of many visits here. [..] Things seem to be moving, opening up in the right direction. I think it's a good time to visit both countries [Israel & South Africa]. It's important to be sensitive to the complexities of the political situation. [..] Few countries, including my own, have perfect human rights records. Everyone is guilty in some manner. The important thing is that something is being done about it. [..] I'm here for three days and I'm playing every day, so I'm not going to get a chance to see very much. But it was a very exciting moment when we drove up the highway and saw the sign 'Jerusalem'. The city has a very important significance for so many people". The first concert took place in the Sultan's Pool - an amphitheater nestled beneath the walls of Jerusalem's Old City. Sting and Trudie strolled through the souk (open-air market) where Sting got a pair of leather sandals. They also visited the Wailing Wall where Sting entered into spirit by wearing a kippa. They stayed at the King David Hotel. Sting delighted radio listeners by wishing the country "Bokertov" (Good morning in Hebrew) on air. |
