11-06-1988 / London / Wembley Stadium (Nelson Mandela Tribute) / UK To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Nelson Mandela a huge benefit show was organized. In June 1964 Mandela was sent to prison by the South African gouverment, because of his protest against apartheid. On 11-02-1990 he was finally released from prison. In 1994 he eventually became president as a result of the first free elections for all South Africans. When the first attendees entered the stadium Sting was still soundchecking ("Calm down! We'll be back in an hour"). Harry Belafonte introduced Sting by saying: "Welcome to one of the greatest artists in the world ... Sting". Sting was the first artist to perform at the benifit show, because a show was scheduled in Berlin the same day. After his set Sting and the band was flown to Heathrow by helicopter. During the set Dolette was assisted by Tessa. |
